1 Chronicles 4:10, we read: "And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that Thou would bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that Thine hand might be with me, and that Thou would keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested."
There are two tiny booklets about the prayer of Jabez, written by different authors.
1. One is written in a way that many out there are praying this prayer as a formula and expect great success of their own plans. 2. The other speaks about the dying to self before the Lord can entrust us with things HE has in store for us.
1. Is about getting things YOU want and getting them fast! Many mouths used after reading this booklet speak: " I WANT! I NEED! WHEN WILL I GET IT!? I want it NOW"
2. Is about total surrender to the Lord and they are waiting in confidence knowing that HIS plans are always the best. And they trust and believe the Lord is always on time! And their mouth speaks: " MAY YOUR WILL BE DONE LORD"
But many people who have read the first book have developed such an attitude as the example I gave in the first explanation!
I am NOT saying that the author of the first book I mention intended to stir up the flesh!
But many people who have read the book have developed such an attitude!
I have spoken and prayed with many people, so I speak from experience here.
Many who came for help were "victims" of this behavior.
Before the Lord can expand our territory, He will enlarge our hearts!
He is the One who serves us, loves us unconditionally, and heals us with the oil and "wine" and takes us to the inn He paid for with HIS life. (He is the Good Samaritan)
When we have learned through experience what suffering is, our hearts have enlarged ** and we are ready for whatever the Lord calls us to do.
Not only can we help others with the knowledge, and wisdom which we have learned by reading the Bible, and listening to His voice, but we can also serve others, with empathy for we made this journey ourselves!
Jabez's prayer is not a formula we can use as an incantation. This behavior smells of superstition. It is a prayer that we can pray in humility and a heart in total surrender.
Only then can we embrace the total truth. Our territory will not expand without the time of training and learning. And certainly not, without going through a time of testing, and going through difficult situations!
